Embracing Trials: A Journey of Faith and Patience

Updated: Jun 1

The Call to Count It All Joy

James 1:2-4 (NKJV) states,

"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing."

Hebrews 6:12 reminds us,

"that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises."

If ever there was a prophetic word needed in this generation, it is this quote from the Letter of James, Jesus' step-brother. Some translations use the word 'temptation' instead of 'trials,' but 'trials' is actually the more accurate term. It conveys the essence of the original Greek word and the context of this phrase.

Understanding Trials and Their Purpose

Trials refer to situations that test the authenticity of our faith in Jesus and our devotion to Him. Jesus Himself was tested immediately after His baptism in water.

Baptism in water is not merely about repenting of sin and living a new life. Jesus was the only one who didn't need to repent because He had no sin in Him. Yet, He was led by the Spirit to be baptised by John. This act is also a public declaration of total devotion and consecration to Him.

Immediately after His commitment, Jesus faced 40 days of enduring temptations. He was tested to see if He was willing not just to fulfil the will of His Father, but to do it in the way His Father wanted and in His timing. Jesus waited patiently, resisting every temptation to yield to the pressure of doing things the devil's way. He chose to wait for His Father to open the door out of the trial and into His ministry.

The Challenge of Patience in a Fast-Paced World

In today's world of social media, AI, fake news, and deceptive companies selling counterfeit products, it is easy to rush into decisions. We often end up deceived. It is crucial to take time to discern the authenticity of someone or something. In this age of 'instant' everything, patience is a commodity seriously lacking—even within the Church.

The authenticity of our faith and love for Jesus is not revealed on platforms, in book sales, or through the 'likes' we receive on social media. Our true authenticity shines in the moments away from the limelight, in times when our faith and devotion to Jesus are tested, often out of the public eye.

The Father's Focus on Character Development

The Father is patient and more concerned with developing the character of Jesus in us than promoting our ministries or giving us an internationally known name. There are times when He strips everything away through circumstances beyond our control. This process brings us back to a place of being content with one-on-one time with Him, our Father.

The wilderness testing period for Jesus prepared Him for what lay ahead. He stepped out of the wilderness into an explosive season of miracles that impacted the entire country and ultimately billions of lives across generations, even until today.

The Beauty of Isolation and Preparation

The Father will often take each one of us away from the clamour, the masses, and the busyness of life. In a world that craves the 'instant and now' spirit, He may settle us in a place others might call 'isolation,' 'backslidden,' or 'giving up.' However, the truth is that we are being prepared in our character for even greater impacts.

In these quiet moments, we learn the wonderful peace that comes with patience. We come to know and trust that a new day will dawn. He will open the door for us to step into something even greater than we could have ever imagined.

Conclusion: Trusting the Process

As we navigate through life's trials, let us remember the words of James and Hebrews. Let us count it all joy when we face challenges, knowing that they are shaping us into the individuals God has called us to be.

Patience is not just a waiting game; it is an active process of trusting in God's timing and His perfect plan for our lives. So, let us embrace our trials with open hearts, knowing that through faith and patience, we will inherit the promises of God.

In the end, it is our journey through trials that will lead us to a deeper understanding of His love and grace. Let's hold on to that promise as we walk this path together, trusting that He is with us every step of the way.
